First Tee of Southern Nevada — Middle School Golf Clinic Spring Program
Dear Parents:
The First Tee of Southern Nevada will start their Middle School golf program for the spring session beginning Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Explore Knowledge Academy has participated in this program for the past three years. This program is open to all Middle School students starting at 5th through 8th Grade. Students do not need their own equipment or need to have any golf experience.
The First Tee Golf Program will be held at Wildhorse Golf Course. Transportation to Wildhorse Golf Course will be provided by EKA staff and parents. Your signature on the permission slip allows for your child to participate in the program and also to be transported to the golf course. Should you want to transport your own child to the golf course, this is also acceptable as long as they arrive on time for the program. NO TRANSPORTATION will be provided back to school. Parents are responsible for picking up students at the golf course no later than 4:30 pm.
Classes are from 3:30pm-4:30pm on the following Tuesdays: April 13, April 20, April 27, May 4, May 11 and May 18. Students may sign up for The First Tee of Southern Nevada Golf Program at no cost during the middle school clinics (normally a $25 charge).
Wildhorse Golf Course is on the north side of Warm Springs Rd. between Green Valley Parkway and Valle Verde Dr. at 2100 W. West Warm Springs Rd.
Please feel free to contact Mr. Keyer or Mr. Takemoto if you have further questions at (702) 730-2933.
Please return a permission slip to Mr. Keyer or Mr. Takemoto by Friday, April 9, 2010.
Middle School Golf Team Tryouts
Explore Knowledge Academy is in its third year of offering middle school golf to students in grades 5-8. We have tried to grow our program each year by offering the First Tee program in the fall and spring. Due to the response of students (from both boys and girls) this year, EKA will have to hold tryouts because we are limited on the number of players we can enter for most tournaments. Most of our middle school tournaments allow us 10 players total that can enter (that is both boys and girls/5th-8th grade). One or two tournaments do let us bring a few extra players just to get them some experience. For this reason our team can carry no more than 15 players maximum. The bottom five players as far as skill level will get tournament experience and be part of the team. However, they will not be able to play in all tournaments. Once the team is chosen, we will send out a letter that details the schedule of tournaments and more information for parents regarding the team.
The tryouts will be held at Wildhorse Golf Club in Henderson. It is located on Warm Springs between Green Valley Parkway and Valle Verde. The tryout is on Thursday, March 25, 2010, from 3:45pm-5:00pm. The students will be hitting golf balls at the range, chipping and putting. The students will need to have their own clubs to use for the tryouts and if they make the team, they cannot share clubs with another student (league rule-disqualification).
Proper behavior and good (passing) grades are expected at school. Eligibility will be checked by the coaches. If a student is not passing academically, they may not be chosen for the team or allowed to tryout. We will also check with the advisors about student behavior. Middle school golf is an extra curricular activity that represents our school, good behavior both on and off the course is expected.
If you have any questions please call the Sandhill Campus at (702) 730-2933 and ask to speak with Mr. Takemoto or Mr. Keyer.
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Our EKA Middle School Golf Team's season will get underway on April 15, 2010, with our first tournament hosted by Faith Lutheran. Our final tournament of the season will be hosted by Las Vegas Day School on May 11, 2010 (tentative date at this time). EKA will be hosting our tournament at Wildhorse Golf Club on Wednesday, April 21, 2010. See the schedule of tournaments below for more details. We will need parent driver assistance on tournament days (as we cannot fit everyone in both of our cars) and when we host the tournament at Wildhorse Golf Club, we will need volunteer help to make the tournament run smoothly that day. Please let Mr. Keyer or Mr. Takemoto know if you will be able to help.
The golf courses that we will be playing at all have dress codes that require the students to wear golf appropriate clothing. We will be asking students to purchase an EKA logo golf shirt so that we will look like a team when we attend these events. The shirt will cost $20.00. Your child will need to wear dress pants or proper shorts with their golf shirt to tournaments. Golf hats or golf visors are acceptable at the courses as well. Denim (jeans or jean shorts), cutoff shorts, and sweatpants are not allowed at most golf courses. Golf shoes or tennis shoes (sneakers) need to be worn by the golfers. Please no flip-flops, boots or sandals.
Most of the tournaments we will play in will require an early release from school to attend these events. Students will need to discuss this with their advisor in case there is something that needs to be made-up (i.e. test, homework, etc.). The times in the schedule below are approximate because we have not received actual starting times for all events yet. We are working off of last year's list for start times until we get more definite times from each of the schools hosting a tournament. For the return times, it worked best last year if we could have each parent give us the best contact number for them (home, cell or both). When we are on our way back from the tournament we can have your child call you to tell you when we will arrive at the Sandhill building and you can meet us there to pick them up.
Other added cost would be that some tournaments require students to pay a fee to the golf course for playing 9 holes. Last year most course fees were $10 (once we paid a little more than that), which is relatively inexpensive for 9 holes of golf on any course. Occasionally, a tournament will not require a fee, but we will let the students know before going to each tournament. I would just plan on paying $10 just in case. The courses accept cash only for greens fees, no checks. Also, we would suggest that students bring food (and drink) for the trip to these tournaments as we will be gone quite a few hours. On very long trips, such as Pahrump, we will be stopping on the way back at a McDonald's or something similar so they may want to bring money for that.
Proper behavior is expected at any practice or tournament we attend. A lack of proper behavior could result in removal from the team. Also, proper behavior and good (passing) grades are expected at school. Eligibility will be checked by the coaches. If a student is not passing academically, they will not be allowed to participate in events until they are passing.

We will hold practices at Wildhorse Golf Club from 3:00pm-4:30pm on the following Monday's due to golf tournament dates, First Tee program, Track & Field practices and the Bowling program. The Monday's are April 12,April 19,April 26,May 3 and May 10. Students will need to bring $2.00 each for range balls on those dates. I will bring the EKA golf shirts to the first practice on April 12th. Cash is fine or a check made out to EKA.
Should you have any questions regarding any of this, please do not hesitate to call the Sandhill building to talk to Mr. Keyer or Mr. Takemoto at (702) 730-2933. The permission slips you filled out for the First Tee program for transportation/permission was a dual enrollment form if they were to make the team. A new permission slip is not needed. If the times above change drastically, we will let you know when the other schools give us more information.
Sincerely,
Mr. Keyer & Mr. Takemoto
