EKA Board of Trustees Minutes, October 24, 2008

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

A regular meeting of the Explore Knowledge Academy Charter School Board of Trustees was held on Friday, October 24th at 4801 S. Sandhill Rd. (at Tropicana) Las Vegas, NV 89121

A. CALL TO ORDER: President Lauren Scheer called the meeting to order at 4:36 pm and led the flag salute and moment of silence.

B. ORGANIZATION

1. Roll Call: A quorum was established with four board members present: Ben Childs, Lauren Scheer, Jay Rosen & Deborah Jackson. Absent members: Jill Nelson, Camille Wilson & Ben Day. Others in attendance: Sean McManus, Danette Green, Clark Price, Connie Ewing, Sue Stewart, Randy Poloniecki, Cal Webster, Michelle Stanford, Todd Mc Briar

2. Adoption of Agenda: Jay Rosen made a motion to accept the agenda as presented and Ben Childs seconded the motion. Vote: all ayes, none opposed, motion carried.

3. Approval of Minutes from September 26th, 2008 meeting: Jay Rosen made a motion to approve the minutes and presented and Deborah Jackson seconded the motion. The motion passes unanimously.

 

C. REPORTS

Administration: Sean McManus presented the administrative report that outlined current enrollment, fundraising, elementary & secondary initiatives, school development, communications, finance & celebrations. Connie Ewing also commented on the development of EKA's National Honor Society Program. An application has been made and EKA should have its first intake of inductees in Spring 2009.

Staff: Cal Webster, EKA middle school advisor commented on his deep commitment to the school and great possibilities it holds for the future.

PTSA: There was no PTSA report at the meeting due to the Trunk or Treat sponsored by the PTSA that was happening simultaneously.

D. Public Comments on Agenda Items: Trustee Jill Nelson has missed the last 3 meetings and consequently her seat has become vacant. Prospective trustees will be sought out to fill her seat. Camille Wilson resigned from the board of Trustees shortly before the meeting for personal reasons. An active search will also begin to fill her seat.

E. Response to Public Comments: None

General Public Comments;

Randy Poloniecki commented on the tremendous development the school has illustrated since its founding 6 years ago.

F. OLD BUSINESS:

1. Charter Development Options: Moving forward with the YMCA partnership. Currently waiting to hear from the YMCA facilities committee regarding BLM issues that might affect site development. Ben Childs made a motion to create a facility committee and that said committee be chaired by Jay Rosen, seconded by Lauren Scheer. The motion passed unanimously.

2. Financial Report: Ben Childs made the motion to accept the 2007-2008 draft Financial Report and audit for filing, seconded by Jay Rosen. The Motion Passed unanimously.

G. NEW BUSINESS:

1. Helmsmen Program Development Members continue to sign on to this program, plans are currently being made for a social gathering and official launch of the program. More information on this event will be presented at our next meeting.

2. Organizational Assessment / Board Retreat Dates Due to a number of conflicts the assessment has been postponed to a date and time to be determined

3. New Staff Hires No new staff hires to report at this time

4. Signing Bonuses Ben Childs made a motion to apply for the Nevada Dept. of Education Teacher Signing Bonus funds, seconded by Deborah Jackson. Motion was approved unanimously.

6. Lunch Lady Contract EKA is evaluating possible lunch options for our students. The program looks very promising and will provide staff students with an organic lunch menu. After the trial we will bring the proposal to the board for their consideration.

H. Closed Session: A closed session was held to discuss HR issues at 6.30pm and concluded at 7.13pm
