Leadership and Community Service are central components of our curriculum at Explore Knowledge Academy. Students across our campuses are exposed to a range of leadership and service learning experiences though their studies and by actively participating in a wide range of activities. A sample of these activities and programs’ appear below:
Elementary Program:
Leadership Class:
Each 9 weeks teachers identify students from their class that have demonstrated leadership qualities in the classroom. These students are placed into a leadership class and meet regularly to discuss creating programs and exploring opportunities to enhance our community. For more information please email Henry Tyler.
Recycling Program:
This program has been initiated to save Explore Knowledge money and create awareness about recycling in the wider community. While this saves the school money, it also provides a range of learning and organizational opportunities for our students that are shared with our community.
Student Store:
Students manage and market their store, maintain books on inventory and deposit funds into a bank account they have established.
Lego Teams:
EKA’s 3-4 advisories have 12 students participating on two different teams in a Lego Robotics competition. The 5-6 advisories have 10 students participating as a team as well. The program pits EKA’s finest in a science and engineering style competition sponsored by the First Lego League organization.
Secondary Program:
Leadership Class:
Students have the opportunity to choose this elective and participate in an advanced course on leadership development. The course runs concurrently with all other curriculum programming and provides an opportunity for students to implement what they have learned in their other classes, on developing their projects and in the other activities in which they participate. For more information on the class please email Henry Tyler.
Student Newspaper:
Middle & High school students volunteer on the Explore Knowledge Student Newspaper in a wide range of roles. From editing to graphic design and layout, it is a full tilt newspaper run by students for students. Perhaps the most exciting opportunity is for students to report on real issues and events that happen at Explore Knowledge & in the community every single day. For more information or to get involved please email Michelle Bennett or Yan Zelmanov.
National Honor Society:
National Honor Society or NHS for short recognizes Explore Knowledge Academy students that excel academically and provide a range of leadership & service learning opportunities for students. NHA is new to Explore Knowledge this year and we are excited about our first class of NHS inductees. For more information on the NHS program as Explore Knowledge, please email Patrick Quinn.
Student Store:
Secondary students run a store that provides a range of snacks and meals for students electing to purchase something to eat during the day. Students set their menu, handle ordering and procurement and manage all community service aspects of their business. Proceeds from the store offset the cost of prom and other student sponsored activities. For more information on the student store please email Deni LaBree.
Community Service:
Service learning is a significant part of our leadership program at Explore Knowledge Academy. Students work with their advisors and the organizations with which they are involved and select a range of organizations in the wider community to use their leadership and project management skills for the greater good. Autism, the Hole in the Wall Camps, the Children’s Cancer & Heart Foundations are but a few of the many worthwhile organizations Explore Knowledge Academy supports. For more information please email Schranda Collier.
